FALLING
Synopsis
I sin instruktørdebut, FALLING, undersøger den anerkendte skuespiller, Viggo Mortensen, de brud og kontraster som præger en moderne familie. FALLING er et intimt drama om en mands forhold til sin aldrende far. John Peterson (Mortensen) bor med sin partner Eric og deres adoptivdatter Monica i det sydlige Californien. Hans far, Willis (Henriksen/Gudnason) er landmand, og hans holdninger og opførsel kommer af en langt mere traditionel tid og familiemodel. Da Willis rejser til Los Angeles for at besøge Johns familie og lede efter et sted at gå på pension, kolliderer deres to verdner. Willis’ opførsel kan både være bidende og sjov – med udbrud der chokerer hans liberale familie. Det gør ham elskelig for barnebarnet Monica, men det bliver næsten for meget for John, da der rippes op i gamle sår og nye skabes undervejs. Willis’ hukommelse forsvinder hastigt, og hans tanker ledes tilbage til hans første kone, Gwen: en kærlighed der stadig har et solidt tag i ham en hel menneskealder senere. Imens far og søn konfronterer de omstændigheder, som har skabt splittelse mellem dem, ser vi op- og nedturene i deres forhold gennem 40 år, og deres forskellige erindringer om Johns mor, Gwen: fra mørke til lyse tider, fra vrede og jalousi over accept, latter, og den hårdt tilkæmpede gunst.
