Synopsis
Søskendeparret Samuel og Magdalena, som er opvokset i en religiøs menighed i Danmark, forsvinder pludseligt. Og på Københavns Politigård dukker en 8 år gammel flaskepost op, med et råb om hjælp, fra en dreng i fangenskab. Carl Mørck og hans assistent, Assad fra politiets Afdeling Q, finder hurtigt ud af, at der er en forbindelse mellem de to sager. Det lykkes dem at grave sig ind i det religiøse samfund og komme på sporet af en mand, der trækker et årelangt spor af bortførelser og mord efter sig. Mord, som aldrig er blevet anmeldt, da han angiveligt hver gang bortfører to børn fra meget religiøse familier, slår det ene barn ihjel og kræver tavshed samt en stor løsesum for det andet. Tiden er knap, og i jagten på at finde børnene, før det er for sent, må Carl Mørck sande, at det at tro på noget er tæt forbundet med livet og døden.
